Experience Black History: walk along MLK

A journey from past to present in downtown Clarksdale, Mississippi

  • 1 hour
  • 25 US dollars
  • Begin on the front porch of Ground Zero Blues Club

Description

Experience Clarksdale's Black history, from past to present -- with someone who's lived it. Join a local resident, historian, or leaders for a walk downtown. Start at "Ground Zero," then journey with them along the 4th Street that became MLK. Hear personal stories intertwining with our country's history, and explore the connections between the blues, civil rights, Black churches -- and so much more, on both sides of the tracks. Tours will be approx. 1hr at a brisk pace, or 90mins if y'all take your time. Please let your guide know if you've got a hot dinner date to make. Bring comfy shoes and plenty of sun and 'skeeter protection. And an umbrella, because it's the Delta and any weather could happen. We'll go forth in drizzle but reserve the right to cancel (with refund or reschedule, of course) if it's pouring and truly miserable. Group discounts available. This experience is intended to connect people with all levels familiarity with our history, from new visitors to locals who have lived it themselves. Churches and schools in particular are welcome to reach out about scheduling a dedicated session for our groups. Look for quarterly Community Discount Days for local pay-what-you-can options, too! A portion of proceeds benefit a nonprofit of each guide's choice, including the First Baptist Church on MLK (where this Christmas Boycott photo was taken) & Griot Arts.
